Understanding Kohlberg

Tom Hanks plays the Sergeant in Saving Private Ryan, a film that takes place in France during World War II. The story line of the film is about a group of soldiers that have one goal, to save a private who's name is Ryan. In there journey they form a band of brothers and decide major decisions as a group. Well Tom Hanks character makes a major decision against the whole platoon. He decides to let a German soldier go that killed one of there squad members. Everyone else wanted to kill the German soldier right then and there but Tom Hanks just let him go. Later in the film the German soldier was put back into circulation and killed two more platoon members. Tom Hanks had to make a choice of life or death and what he thought was saving a life ended up killing two. I think this is level three of the Kohlberg stage because its based off of Tom Hanks judgment and personal perspective. Its stage five because its right or wrong based on the greatest number of people and his whole entire platoon thought it was wrong. Also the decision was made on thinking he was going to benefit the society by keeping a life but was changed.

Good analysis, I agree.
